Clinical Professor of Marketing, NYU Stern
Founder and Chairman, L2
Professor
The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania

Renowned business professors and authors Scott Galloway and Adam Grant present in back-to-back sessions, sharing who is having the biggest impact on business and society and how to strategically set your company apart.

8:00am: The four: What to do

Worth more than $2.3 trillion combined, the big four (Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Google) continue to define disruption and grab share from media companies, brands, and retailers. Focused on the transforming state of retail, Scott Galloway Professor of Marketing at the NYU Stern School of Business, and Founder of L2, will showcase how the traditional rules of business doesn't apply to the Big Four and identify ways that brands and companies can fight back.

8:30am: Originals: How non-conformists move the world

To survive and thrive, organizations need original thinking. Yet most individuals stay silent instead of voicing their best ideas—and many leaders stifle dissent rather than encouraging it. Drawing on his blockbuster book, Originals, Adam Grant explores how we can all get better at recognizing and championing new ideas; how to overcome fear and doubt; and how to build cultures that welcome diverse perspectives and honest feedback. He reveals why late entrants typically beat first movers; why friendly managers end up being the least supportive; how devil’s advocates often backfire but contrarian opinions are useful even when they’re wrong; and how the values that help organizations prosper early on are the same that thwart their growth later. Grant’s insights on unleashing originality have been praised by J.J. Abrams, Richard Branson, Malcolm Gladwell, Sheryl Sandberg and Peter Thiel, and this talk brings them to life in ways that are both surprising and entertaining.

At the end of this session, Adam Grant and Mindy Grossman will host an audience Q&A through the Shop.org mobile app and Twitter. Use #ProvocativeIdeas to submit your questions at any time during the session!

What's the recipe for viral content, and how do you find hungry consumers?

Purple isn’t the only company selling mattresses online, but it’s probably the only one with viral videos contributing to 924% growth in mobile conversions and revenue. The idea was to sell directly to the customer, providing personalized service and technically advanced products without markups. A digital-first approach to marketing might seem obvious, but their viral videos – we’re talking over 200 million views in the first year – were far from ordinary. Get their behind-the-scenes 'how to' on everything from successfully balancing your marketing spend between science and creative to diversifying your partners and platforms.

The internet is the most efficient market in history - great for shoppers but challenging for retailers. Amidst a sea of competitors who are only a click away, retailers (1) lose 98% of traffic they pay for, (2) fall victim to third-party sites who take their customers and force a side-by-side price-based race-to-the-bottom, and (3) are often hostage to M.A.P.

Successful selling online takes more than good advertising, good products and a good website. It takes tools that engage, convert and retain your customers - tools you can use to compete against competitors small and large - even Amazon.

Retailers must take an experience-first approach that engages customers as they move between device and store. Today’s digitally sophisticated shoppers require memorable, immersive experiences.

As AI has become more reliable, it offers retailers powerful means to intelligently predict customer behavior, enhance the shopper experience and ultimately increase sales. Ranging from the ability for shoppers to receive suggestions based on their shopping behaviors - a belt that matches a pair of pants, wine paired to a dinner recipe - to digitally enabled experiences such as virtual makeovers that draw consumers into brick-and-mortar stores, AI-fueled recommendations are enhanced with each interaction. AI also has the potential to transform retail operations including Merchandising, Supply Chain and Product Lifecycle Management.
